Reel Mowers: Introduction

Reels mowers hearken back to an earlier and much simpler time as they are the type of mower you might see being used in television shows from the 1950's and '60s. You may have even used one yourself as a child. If you haven't, it's a sure bet that your parents or grandparents did. These old fashioned push reel mowers were very heavy and hard to push and maneuver. With the increased convenience, ease of use, and low fuel prices of that day and age, it is easy to see why most people originally made the switch to power mowers.

The times have changed and fuel prices are steadily increasing. This is one of the many reasons that the reel mower was reinvented and is back in demand. The reel mowers of today are not the same as the reel mowers of yesteryear. The days of the clunky, awkwardly heavy, hard to maneuver reel mower have long since passed. Today's reel mowers are made from high quality light weight metals and are constructed with ease of use and maneuverability in mind. They have very sharp hardened steel blades and can easily cut through the thickest grass with very little resistance.

Reel mowers are not efficient for cutting large or overly weedy lawns. Grass can also be near impossible to cut if you allow it to get too tall. Because of this, you may need to mow your lawn a bit more often. If you have a smaller sized lawn they are the perfect choice as they are very quiet, require no fuel, and produce no pollution. During this age of ever increasing fuel and energy prices, reel mowers are an excellent human powered option.

Reel Mower Recommendation

Scotts 20-Inch Push Reel Mower

The mower is a lightweight, maneuverable, environmentally friendly, and needless to say fuel efficient lawn mower. In spite of its highly maneuverable and extremely lightweight design, this mower's sturdy construction has what it takes to get the job done with ease.

The five knife-sharp heat-treated, steel blades can be easily set for nine different grass heights using the easily adjustable wheel tabs. Keep in mind that this reel mower is designed for cutting grass which makes cutting through thicker weeds and broadleaf plants a near impossible feat. Still, the Scotts Classic Reel Mower has just what you need to cover the roughest backyard terrain. It has a cutting width of 20 inches and its wheels are 10 inches with radial tires. Even though it is a little on the thin side, the handle's soft cushion does make mowing with this device a little easier. All-in-all the Scotts Reel Mower is a sturdy, well-built, simple machine that is extremely easy to assemble and use.

People with larger yards or yards that are full of weeds will probably want something with a little more power. However, if you have a smaller well-groomed lawn, like exercise, and are concerned about the environment and the rising cost of fuel then the Scotts Classic Reel Mower is probably the lawn mower for you.
