March 18th, 2010 No comments

If you like the factory swivel wheel mowers, but not their cost, then you’ll really like our Eazy Mow swivel wheel accessory. It is the only product that allows anyone quickly and inexpensively to upgrade their push or self-propelled mower from a standard wheel mower to their very own zero-turn, swivel wheel mower. Better yet, you’ll save hundreds of dollars compared to any factory mower with swivel wheels.
Mowing the lawn is basically a dreaded chore, but with Eazy Mow you can zip around trees, flower beds or any obstacle with little or no effort. Eazy Mow eliminates strain, struggle and over exertion because there’s never any need to lift your mower to make a turn or to reverse your mowing. Even the tightest turns are all very simple with a quick and easy 180 degree turn. Our customers say they can’t imagine anyone not needing this product if they own a walk-behind mower. Being universal, our swivel wheel system replaces one set of standard wheels and height adjusters (front or rear) on walk-behind push and self-propelled mowers. In all cases you will be replacing the non-drive wheels. Our product installs using your factory mounting holes and in most cases there’s only need to remove one bolt and nut per wheel assembly. It’s very simple and only takes a few minutes. Easy to read instructions and illustrations are provided.

Simply put, Eazy Mow saves you time, money, greatly reduces your workload and is compatible with practically every mower brand and model from 1981 to date 2007. Environmentally Friendly and Easy to Assemble
With the Scotts 2000-20 Classic Push Reel Lawnmower, you not only save yourself the expense of purchasing gasoline, but you also decrease your carbon footprint by eliminating the pollution created by a gas mower. Powered by you, this mower has no complicated engine components to deal with and assembles with no tools required, so you can be ready to cut the grass within minutes of receiving your new lawnmower.

Wider Cutting Width Reduces Time and Effort
The Scotts 2000-20 Classic Push Reel Lawnmower features a wider-than-average 20-inch cutting width that reduces time and effort on your part. A wide 20-inch cutting path will reduce the number of passes required to cut your lawn, so you will get the job done more quickly and more efficiently.

Quick-Snap Height Adjusters Mean Easy Custom Control
Get complete control over the height of your lawn. The easy-to-use quick-snap height adjusters provide fingertip control over your blade height for precision cuts. Adjustable from one to three inches, they easily fit into nine different height slots and stay securely locked in place thanks to quick-snap technology.

Precision Blade Technology and Ball Bearing Reel
The five-spider, five-blade reel features five heat-treated steel blades for accurate cuts every time. Designed with smooth ball bearings, the blades spin efficiently as you push the mower. Each blade slices through grass with extreme precision, leaving behind fine mulch, which is essential for a healthy lawn. The five-blade cutting action is designed to provide precision performance over the life of the mower, and its tough, heavy-duty steel design is built to last.

Dual Wheel Tracking for Maneuverability
The Scotts Classic Push Reel Lawnmower features two 10-inch composite wheels with radial tires plus two six-inch tracking wheels for added maneuverability. This innovative dual wheel tracking technology eliminates drag and makes it easier to push the Scotts 2000-20 mower over even the toughest terrain. The loop-style handle with foam grip provides added comfort during operation and also enhances the mower’s maneuverability.

The Scotts 2000-20 20-Inch Classic Push Reel Lawnmower weighs approximately 34 pounds (shipping weight) and is backed by a two-year warranty.

RoboMower – RL850

February 9th, 2010 No comments

Early Adopters Pick: May 2003. The first fully robotic lawnmower that can learn its way round your yard.

The Robomower is convenient, easy, robotic, and clean–and it transforms the world of yard work! Set up (once), turn on, and the Robomower cuts the grass on almost any surface–all by itself. Getting the system set up in your yard can take most of an afternoon, but the well-written manual makes the job easier. The biggest part of the set-up task is stringing the perimeter wire around your yard, marking the boundaries the Robomower will stay within. Once you’re set, and the mower is on, the machine simply senses the perimeter wire and uses three mulching blades to cut down everything inside the wire. Thanks to the onboard computer, the Robomower can even learn parts of your yard as it mows, making it quicker next time. The mower is quiet, automatic, and the mulching blades mean that when it’s done you don’t need to bag or rake.

The Robomower is outfitted with safety features. It won’t run at all if it’s flipped over with the blades exposed. Likewise, it turns tail and backs off if its soft 360-degree bumpers encounter any foreign object (like a pet or toy or favorite rose bush). A theft deterrent system keeps the unit safe. The Robomower is very quiet compared to other lawn mowers, although because it takes longer to get the job done than a human with a walk-behind mower, what noise there is lasts longer. The mower works best on level yards smaller than 3,200 square feet, with the grass reasonably tame to begin with. It does not work well on hilly or overgrown yards. While it takes a full day to recharge the battery, a full charge is enough to mow most lawns. (The mower is definitely no lightweight, either; it takes two people to remove the machine from the box when it arrives.) The Robomower is definitely a smart idea for folks with physical conditions that make strenuous activities like mowing difficult, but it’s also a great product for anyone who feels like there’s always something better to do with a weekend afternoon than lawn mowing. Rechargeable power pack comes included.–Brian Trinen

Measuring Power Output

Measuring Power

What do all the power measurements mean?

Your main concern is probably whether or not the blade of the lawn mower will spin quickly enough to efficiently cut your grass. In actuality, the ratings of mowers are determined by much more technical aspects.

For gasoline powered mowers, there are three measurements of power that you may see:

  • horsepower (hp) refers to the maximum amount of power that is produced by the engine;
  • torque is the percentage of horsepower that is transferred to the cutting blade;
  • cc (cubic centimeters) is a measurement of the engine’s power that is based on the displacement volume of its cylinders.

There are two different types of gas engines to consider as well as electric motors.

The first is the two-stroke, which is also referred to as the two-cycle.  Two-stroke engines offer the advantage of more power but also produce more pollution.  The other type is the four-stroke.  It lacks the power of the two-stroke for a similar size of engine, but doesn’t produce as much pollution.

Power in electric and cordless lawn mowers is measured in volts, amps, and watts.  Horsepower can be calculated by first multiplying the number of volts by the number of amps to determine the wattage.  Then you simply divide the wattage by 746 to calculate the horsepower of the mower.

The amount of horsepower doesn’t necessarily indicate greater or lesser cutting power.  Because of this fact, in 2007, many lawn mower manufacturers started the practice of rating walk-behind mowers based upon their torque power or cc’ instead of their amount of horsepower.  If the amount of torque isn’t provided in the stats of a gas mower then the amount of torque can be determined by the number of cc’s.  Generally speaking, higher cc’s indicate higher torque as well as a larger amount of fuel required per stroke.

You certainly don’t want to purchase a mower based solely upon its power measurements.  You also want to be sure that it possesses the features that you desire as well as a warranty and high ratings from reviewers.

Choosing A Mower

Types Of Lawn Mower

There are several different types of lawnmower to consider.

Push Reel Mowers

There are manually powered push mowers where the machine and the cutting blades are powered by you pushing the lawnmower. These are usually known as Push Reel Mowers. Benefits are that they are cheap to buy and environmentaly friendly but the downside is that they can be hard work to use for anything more than a very small patch of grass.

Push Mower With Powered Cutting Blades

Next we have the powered blades but manually pushed lawnmowers. The blades may be powere by either a gas engine or electricity from either batter power or a length of cable that is attached to the machine.

Benefits are that they are easier to push around because the machine uses a power source to do the cutting but you still have to physically push the machine around. Disadvantags vary depending on the power source. Corded electric lawnmowers are cheap and light but you have to deal with a cable dragging around behind you. Battery powered lawnmowing machines are heavier and more expensive than corded and you need to remember to get the battery fully charged before you start grass cutting. Gas powered lawn mowers can be heavy to use, they emit exaust fumes and can be noisy but they are usually rugged and last for years and are not limited to being within reach of a power source or needing a charged up battery.

Self Propelled Follow Behind Lawn Mowers

Powerdriven walk behind lawnmowers are mostly gas powered. They can be expensive and heavy but once in motion they are very easy to use and can cope with most grass cutting tasks.

Robot Lawnmowers

Robot Lawnmowers have been growing in popularity over the last ten years or so. They are now reliable and efficient machines that can save you a lot of time cutting your grass every weekend. They can be quite expensive to buy but the savings in time, and money if you would otherwise employ a lawncare service, justify the expense. Once they are set up you can almost forget about them and your robotic lawnmower will keep your lawn in tidy condition throughout the summer growing period.

Ride On Lawnmowers

The traditional ride on lawnmower, or lawn tractor, remains popular and if you have a large are of grass to cut regularly they are a worthwhile investment. They range in size and cost from around $1,000 up to around $3,000 or more. Benefits are that cutting large areas of grass and lawn is much easier to doand the only real downside is the cost of purchase and maintenence of the gas engine.

Zero Turn Radius Lawn Tractors

If you have a huge area of grass to cut and need to have a very manouverable grass cutting machine then the zero radius lawn tractor is the machine for you. They can cope with enormous areas of grass cutting and can almost turn on a penny. They can cost a pretty penny to purchase as the bigger machines are aimed at professional lawn care people but they are the cream of graden machinery and if you can justify the expense they are the ultimate machine to own.

Gas Walk Behind LawnMower

Gasoline Powered Walk Behind Mowers: Introduction

If you have a medium to large sized yard or even a smaller yard with a denser, thicker lawn, then you will probably want a mowing machine with a little power behind it. Gasoline powered mowers do offer more in terms of power but with it comes the added expense of  fuel and oil.  Gasoline powered mowers also require more maintenance than reel or electric mowers.  So if you have a smaller well groomed lawn, a gasoline powered mower may actually cost you more time and money in the long run than the other options available.  However, if your lawn is very large, has lots of hills, or is hard to manage with a weaker mower then gasoline is certainly the way to go.

When you are choosing a gasoline powered mower there are a few things to keep in mind.  First there is the consideration of how level your lawn is.  If your yard has steep hills or very uneven ground, you will definitely want to consider buying a self-propelled model.  This will make mowing uphill far easier.  It is also good to look for a self-propelled mower that has the option of adjustable speeds. This will enable you to find a speed that is right for your mowing pace.  Obviously, if you have a fairly level or flat lawn, then a regular push mower will be sufficient to get the job done.

The next thing to consider when you are selecting your gas powered mower, whether it is self-propelled or not, is the weight and composition of the lawn mower deck.  Some models of walk-behind mowers are made from lightweight aluminum alloys that make them very easy to maneuver and push.  While other models may be constructed using a much heavier steel body. While a deck constructed of solid steel is much more rugged and durable, a lighter mower body makes for a much easier uphill climb especially if the mower is a push mower. This is not as big of an issue with self-propelled models but you may still want a lighter body mower if possible to make the task of mowing an easier one.

The gasoline powered walk-behind mower is a great choice for those who are wanting or needing a little extra cutting power without breaking their pocketbook.

Gasoline Powered Walk Behind Mower Recommendation

Poulan Pro 21-inch 625 Series Briggs & Stratton Gas Powered Side Discharge/Bag/Mulch Lawn Mower #PR625N21RH
If you are looking for a self-propelled walk-behind mower that can get the job finished quick then the Poulan Pro 21-Inch 6.5 HP Gas Self-Propelled Mulching Mower is a great choice.  With its 21-inch cutting width and 6 1/2 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine, it can make quick work of any decent sized lawn. This mower is easy to set up and get started right out of the box.  The reliable Briggs and Stratton engine makes starting this mower as easy as one swift pull of the cord.  The deck of this mower is constructed of steel which makes it is heavier than some but also extremely rugged and durable.

Overall, this mower can provide the power, durability and reliability that you need in a form that is as easy to use as it is affordable.

Walk Behind Mowers

The Four Basic Walk Behind Mowers

There are push reel mowers, electric mowers, cordless mowers, and gasoline powered mowers. They all have their own unique strengths and weaknesses. Once you explore what these are it will become much easier to choose which is right for you.

Push Reel Mowers
The ultimate green machines. They produce no pollution because they are human powered. This not only makes them extremely friendly to the environment but also a smart economical choice as there is no fuel cost. Other great positive attributes to consider are the lack of engine noise, no need for burdensome cords, and they don’t require recharging.

Even with keeping all of these positive aspects in consideration, the practicality of a push reel mower diminishes with larger sized lawns. If you own a larger lawn, you obviously won’t be in the market for the back breaking workout that mowing it with a push reel would require.

Another thing to keep in mind is that their effectiveness tends to wane as the grass becomes taller. In fact they begin to become much less effective on grass that is taller than two inches. This means that you may be required to mow your lawn more often than you would with other types of lawn mowers. Also keep in mind that thicker lawns and lawns that are loaded with weeds are harder to mow using a push reel mower. If you have a smaller sized lawn that you don’t mind keeping trimmed on a regular basis and you are concerned about the environment, then the push reel mower may just be your machine.

Corded Electric Mowers
These require the use of an electrical outlet to power them. This means that you may run into the problem of finding a convenient place to plug them in. You are also limited to only being able to mow within the limited reach of the power cord. Another thing to consider is avoiding tangles or snagging the cord as you are mowing. If your lawn is small and you don’t want the extra exercise that mowing with a push reel provides then an electric mower may be your answer.

Cordless Mowers
They get their power from an onboard rechargeable battery. On the positive side, you don’t have the aches and pains of dealing with an electrical cord to worry about but you do have the added weight of the battery to deal with. There is also the limitation of the length of the mowing time per charge. It all depends upon the capacity of the battery, the height and thickness of your lawn, and the size of your mowing area. Taking all of these variables into consideration, you can determine whether or not you can finish the job with just one charge. Figuring this out will go a long way to helping you to decide if using a cordless mower would be practical for you.

Gasoline Powered Lawnmowers
These have the obvious advantage of added power, which is great if your mowing an area that is full of dense, thick, or tall grass. They are also a must for larger yards that measure beyond 2,000 square feet. The main downsides are the added cost of gas and oil as well as the regular maintenance that gasoline powered machines require.
